Journal of a New Soccer Mom

Journal of a New Soccer Mom

First night of practice. I was thankful for every minute that ticked by closer to the end of practice. But when it was finished, I felt so accomplished!

This week I stepped into my new role as a Soccer Mom. The crazy part of it all, I did not just become a Soccer Mom but also my daughters’ Soccer Coach. The kicker is that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing!

Sometimes, I wonder how I get myself into these predicaments.  This time, I know. I love my daughter and after getting an email a couple of times throughout the course of the week asking for parent volunteers to be coaches, I began to contemplate it. By the third email when they were all but begging for volunteers, I felt I had to at least offer to help. I didn’t want her to not get to play in her very first season or have a bad experience if the teams were overcrowded. So, I bit the bullet but was totally honest with them when I offered, letting them know that I truly know nothing about soccer!

Finally, the time came for practice to commence. I was pretty nervous but told myself I could do this.  After all, isn’t this what we are always teaching Hayden, to speak positive words into her life? I managed to start the practice with a couple of drills in mind that were more like games to the kids. Soon after, parents started to step up to suggest new games and offer advice. Some of them even played along with me and the kids. We had a good time and met some really nice people.

Scrimmage to end the second practice! One week down! Now, I’m really having fun!

The next practice went equally well. I watched multiple U10 soccer drill videos on YouTube and was lucky enough to get some advice from one of my daughters’ friends that has played for about three years. Her Mom, my friend, was also helpful in explaining some of the technical aspects and elaborating on her daughters’ instructions! I feel very lucky to have become part of a community of Moms and girls that are encouragers. In a world where there is so much focus on negativity, we have been blessed with people in our circle that are full of positive energy that want to see us succeed, as we do them. And I think it all begins with our mindset. Believing in ourselves is of utmost importance but also choosing our friends wisely and realizing that we are worthy of being surrounded by supporting, encouraging girls and women is so important. I would encourage anyone to evaluate the people around them because true friends only want to see each other succeed and everyone deserves that in their lives. I know we can do this and who knows, maybe we will end up being the soccer version of “The Bad News Bears” and win it all in the end! In the meantime, if you want to send some tips or positive vibes our way that can’t hurt either!
